Bunking lectures and going for movies has always been a regular activity for college going students. Yeah a real good break from the traumatizing and mind numbing technical lectures..haha..On friday, myself with my bunch of friends (Vikas,Vinay, ankita, amruta, gayatri &beethika) took a day off and went out to watch two back to back movies (both first day first shows). First, we watched Phoonk which truly phoonked the audiences to get out of the theatre. A pathetic horror flick. Phook reminded me of a hilarious episode of decade old Jaspal Bhatti’s comedy show Ulta Pulta, aired on our National channel, where the comedian tries to make a thriller and is surprised to win an award for Best Comedy Film for the same flick. At least you can say this for the first half of Phook where instead of getting scared one would laugh his/her heart out. After seeing the promotions of Rs. 5 lacs prize money for the person watching this flick alone, this wasn’t been expected from a proven director like Ram Gopal Varma. . In short the movie was a total rip off.
Later, myself, beeths, Gayuu and vinay all went back into the theatre but this time it was for a much intriguing film, a film whose promotions were rather impotent compared to the others released on the same day. The film - Mumbai Meri Jaan.
Mumbai Meri Jaan is more of a tribute to the never-dying spirit of this dynamic city called Mumbai. A film that every citizen should watch!
The serial bombing of suburban trains in Mumbai in 2006 is a nightmarish incident the nation would never forget. I myself, still experience gooseflesh recalling the ghastly incident. Mumbai Meri Jaan recreates the incident on celluloid. It talks about the aftermath of this tragedy and how the lives of five people, not remotely connected or associated with one another, gets affected in the process. Mumbai Meri Jaan is more of an emotional journey.
From a brilliant broadcast journalist to a patriotic corporate man; from a retiring policeman at the twilight of his life to a rookie cop at the dawn of his career; from an angry and xenophobic unemployed young man to a coffee-vendor struggling to survive and belong: Mumbai Meri Jaan follows the lives of people from all strata of Mumbai's bustling society as they tackle the aftermath of a fatal incident that brings out the best and sometimes the worst in them.
I still remember the day June 12th, 2006 when i was at the blood spattered morgue of bhabha hospital. Unfortunately, over there i had seen my friend's mangled body lying amidst several others. The movie depicted such ghastly incidents which were emotionally very moving and left me depressed to no end. In this movie, there is truly a dignity and stillness in their suffering that speaks louder than any melodrama.
Every performance in the film is applaud-worthy. Paresh steals the show (especially toward the end, his heavy-handed dialogue underlining the fact that terrorism is a global scourge was phenomenal). This performance should easily make it into the Top 5 performances of the year. Irrfan (acting as a 'Madarasi' coffeewala)is marvellous. Watch him hate the fragrance of the perfume soon after he has been insulted at the mall. It's superb! Kay Kay is fantastic. The actor makes his part appear so real. Soha is a surprise. Watch her emotional breakdown at the morgue. Truly amazing. Madhavan is equally competent, conveying so much even when silent.
On the whole, Mumbai Meri Jaan is a well-intentioned film that should win praise for its execution and performances. Mumbai Meri Jaan is quietly evocative and a must watch for every INDIAN. Kudos to UTV for backing such a film! Great Job! Bunking lectures to watch this movie - Worth it !!!
